Twitter/X has been running really slowly on my iPhone, especially when loading the feed, images, and notifications. I’ve seen people suggest clearing the Twitter cache on iPhone, but I’m not sure if it actually helps or if I should try reinstalling the app instead. Has anyone fixed a slow Twitter app this way?
If X is eating a ton of space on your iPhone, the safest thing to know is this: clearing its cache does not delete your posts, bookmarks, followers, or accounts. That stuff lives on X’s servers. You’re mostly just removing temporary files the app saved so images, GIFs, videos, and in-app web pages load faster.
The in-app cache controls are still there for most people, but they’re buried pretty deep. Open X, tap your profile icon in the top-left, then go to Settings and Support > Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage.
Scroll down to Storage. You should see two separate areas:
- Media storage is the safe one to clear. It removes cached images, GIFs, video previews, and similar junk from your feed. Hitting Clear media storage should not log you out.
- Web storage is for the browser inside X, like links you opened from posts. Clear web page storage usually just removes cached page data. Clear all web storage also clears cookies, so that one can log you out of sites you opened inside the app.
If the X app still shows something ridiculous like 10GB or 20GB in iPhone storage, the in-app cleanup may not be enough. In that case, use iOS’s offload option instead of fully deleting the app.
Go to iPhone Settings > General > iPhone Storage > X, then tap Offload App. After that, tap Reinstall App. Offloading removes the app itself but keeps the important local data, like login info, so it can clear out a lot of cached junk without treating it like a full delete. It’s usually a better “deep clean” than the buttons inside X.
That said, app cache is not always the real storage problem. Clearing X might feel good, but sometimes you only get a couple gigs back and the phone still feels cramped. For a lot of people, the bigger issue is the photo library: screenshots, duplicate shots, giant videos, and ten almost identical pictures of the same thing.
A lot of cleaner apps are annoying because they scan your phone for free, then make you pay before you can actually delete anything. One free option worth looking at is Clever Cleaner. The main reason it stands out is that it’s actually free, with no ads or subscription wall just to finish the cleanup.
The Heavies tab is useful because it sorts photos and videos by file size, so you can immediately see what’s taking up the most room. It also shows exact file sizes, which makes it easier to decide what’s worth deleting.
The Similars tab is probably the handiest part. It groups near-duplicate photos and helps you keep the best one instead of scrolling through your camera roll forever. It also processes everything on the device, so your photos are not being uploaded somewhere else just to find duplicates.
So yes, clear the X cache if the app is laggy or bloated. It’s safe for your posts and bookmarks, and it may free up some space. But if your iPhone is constantly yelling about storage, check your photos too. That’s usually where the bigger win is.
Check your free iPhone storage before you start deleting anything inside X. If the phone is down to the last couple GB, every app can feel weirdly slow because iOS is juggling space for downloads, thumbnails, updates, and temp files. In that case, clearing X cache might help for a bit, but it is treating a symptom.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer that clearing media storage is usually safe, but I’d push back a little on expecting it to fix feed lag by itself. A slow X feed is just as often caused by connection issues, X’s own servers, a bad app update, VPN/private relay weirdness, or Low Power Mode making background activity less smooth. Try force-closing X, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular, turning off VPN if you use one, and checking whether other media-heavy apps are loading slowly too. That tells you whether it’s really an X cache problem.
If X is huge in iPhone Storage, clear the media cache or offload/reinstall it. If X is only taking a normal amount of space, I wouldn’t waste much time chasing cache buttons. Update the app, reboot the phone, and check your available storage. For photo/video cleanup, something like Clever Cleaner may be useful, but that’s more of a phone storage fix than a direct “make Twitter fast” fix.
Load X in Safari for a minute and compare it with the app before clearing anything. If the same feed, images, and notifications are slow there too, cache is probably not the main issue. That points more toward your connection, X being flaky, or the account/feed itself taking time to refresh.
Clearing the cache can help when the app has a pile of old image/video junk or a corrupted cached file, but it is not a magic speed button. The annoying part is that right after you clear media storage, some things may feel slower at first because X has to download thumbnails, avatars, GIFs, and previews again. So if your problem is “images load slowly,” clearing cache might briefly make that exact thing more noticeable.
I’d do it as a low-risk cleanup step, especially if X is huge in iPhone Storage, but I wouldn’t keep repeating it every few days. If the app gets slow again immediately after clearing cache and reinstalling/offloading, then the cache was probably never the real problem. At that point I’d look harder at network settings, VPN/iCloud Private Relay, Low Power Mode, or just wait for the next X update if the slowdown started after an app update.
A bloated-cache problem usually looks like X taking ages to display media it has already seen; a service/network problem looks like the feed and notifications hanging no matter what you clear.
So yes, clear it once if X is huge in iPhone Storage, but don’t treat it like maintenance. If it feels slow again the same day, I’d stop chasing cache and check Wi-Fi/cellular, VPN, and whether Background App Refresh is off for X.
