I removed my exFAT-formatted SD card without safely ejecting it, and now some files are missing or the card isn’t reading correctly. I need help with exFAT SD card file recovery and the safest way to get my data back without making things worse.
I’ve been through this with a 128 GB exFAT SD card from a camera, after formatting it by mistake. At the time I thought the whole weekend of photos and videos was gone. The main thing I learned: stop touching the card right away. That matters more than picking the “perfect” recovery app.
Don’t keep using the USB drive or SD card. Don’t copy anything onto it, don’t format it again, and don’t run CHKDSK or other repair tools first. Deleted or formatted data may still be sitting there, but every new write can overwrite part of it.
Check backups first, if there’s any chance you have one. I didn’t, so I went straight to recovery software. I used Disk Drill, and in my case it got almost everything back.
The process was pretty simple:
- Install Disk Drill on the computer, not on the SD card or USB drive you’re trying to recover.
- Connect the exFAT card with a card reader.
- Pick the card in Disk Drill and run a scan. In most cases, Universal Scan is the one to use.
- Let it finish, then preview the files before recovering them.
- Save the recovered files to another drive, like your internal SSD, not back onto the same card.
One useful thing with the Windows version is that it lets you recover up to 100 MB for free. So you can at least confirm the files are recoverable before paying for anything.
If the card or USB drive is acting flaky, like disconnecting, reading painfully slowly, or showing up only sometimes, make a disk image first. Then scan the image instead of hammering the original device over and over. That’s a safer approach when the media might be failing.
For camera video recovery, especially from drones, DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, GoPros, or dashcams, Disk Drill also has Advanced Camera Recovery (ACR). I didn’t need it since I was mainly after photos, but it’s worth trying if you’re missing MP4, MOV, or similar footage. Those files can be fragmented, and regular scans don’t always handle that well.
If Disk Drill doesn’t find what you need, TestDisk is another option. It’s free, but it’s a lot less beginner-friendly. I’d think of it more as a partition repair tool than the easiest way to pull back individual deleted files.
The one situation where I wouldn’t keep trying DIY tools is physical failure. If the device isn’t detected anywhere, keeps dropping out, gets unusually hot, or looks damaged, stop. More attempts can make things worse. A recovery lab is usually the better route at that point. Most will evaluate it for free, though actual recovery can easily run a few hundred dollars or more depending on what failed.
If this is just deleted or formatted data, your odds are a lot better. Stop using the device, recover the files to a different drive, and only think about repairs after that. That’s what saved me.
Don’t click “Format,” “Initialize,” or Windows “Scan and fix” just because the card pops up that message. That can turn a recoverable exFAT problem into a messier one. Same goes for putting the card back in the camera to “see if it fixes itself.” Cameras love to create folders, thumbnails, databases, and other little writes.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on recovering to a different drive, but I’d be a little more cautious before running any recovery scan directly on the SD card if it’s behaving inconsistently. If the card mounts, copy off the most important visible files first, starting with the irreplaceable stuff. Then, if you can, make an image of the whole card and work from that image. A recovery app like Disk Drill is fine for the scan/recovery part, especially if you want previews and a less technical interface, but the safest workflow is still: original card touched as little as possible, image or clone next, recovered files saved somewhere else.
Small thing people forget: if you’re using a full-size SD adapter, check the little lock tab. It doesn’t magically protect every reader, but when it works it can prevent accidental writes while you’re inspecting the card. And if the card is disappearing, clicking, heating up, or showing a different size than it should, stop treating it like a software issue. At that point, repeated scans are just stress-testing the card, not helping your files.
Rule out the reader first.
A surprising number of “my exFAT card is corrupted” cases are really a bad USB hub, loose microSD adapter, cheap reader, or a dirty contact. Try a different reader and a direct USB port before you start assuming the file system is toast. Don’t let Windows repair it during that test. Just see whether the card shows the correct size and whether the same files are missing in the same way.
The missing detail with exFAT is that the file contents and the folder listing are not the same thing. After an unsafe removal, the directory info can be wrong even when the actual photo/video data is still sitting there. So don’t panic if filenames or folders look weird in recovery software. You may get files back with generic names, wrong dates, or split video chunks. Annoying, but still better than writing repairs to the card and making the recovery cleaner-looking but worse.
I’d use Disk Drill or similar only after the card is stable enough to read, preferably from an image like @viajeroceleste said. The big rule is boring but important: recover to your computer or another drive, then check the recovered files before you format or reuse the SD card.
It probably didn’t erase the files; it more likely left exFAT’s bookkeeping half-updated. If the card still reads, copy the most important visible files first with normal copy, not cut/move, and skip anything that freezes so a recovery scan can deal with it later.
